Identify the Payment
The table includes weekend, public-holiday, late-hour and overlapping-shift claims as taxable overtime income. Report the actual remuneration through the applicable employment-income route. If a payment instead reimburses a meal or transport expense, consult its dedicated conditions and keep it separately classified rather than treating every overtime-related payment alike.
Treat Overtime Claims as Pay for Additional Work
Calling a payment a ‘claim’ does not make it an expense reimbursement. IRAS specifically lists weekend claims, public-holiday claims, late-hours claims and overlapping-shift claims as taxable overtime payments. Identify whether the amount compensates the employee for working additional hours before applying a payroll exclusion. An approved timesheet supports the payment calculation; it does not turn remuneration into a non-taxable benefit.
As practical preparation, reconcile the approved additional hours, rate or fixed allowance, gross overtime amount and payslip. For example, keep a public-holiday work payment separate from the employee’s underlying travel or meal receipt, even if both were submitted through the same claims system. The overtime component follows this taxable-pay guidance. Any genuinely different benefit needs its own relevant IRAS treatment, rather than borrowing an exemption because it was paid on the same date.
Check the Gross Amount Reaches Employment Reporting
Compare overtime recorded in payroll with the employment-income figures prepared for the relevant income year. Include payments made through an expense platform in that reconciliation so taxable overtime is not omitted merely because it bypassed the ordinary salary code. Keep corrections traceable to the original pay period and approved amount instead of deleting the supporting entry. These are practical payroll checks, not additional statutory overtime rates or a statement about which employees are entitled to overtime under employment law; this page addresses the tax character of the payment.
