GST: Tax Evasion or Fraud

IRAS provides separate routes for reporting suspected evasion and understanding an investigation.

Source checked · 11 October 2026

Key Requirements

The reporting page describes indicators and the information supporting a report; the investigation page explains the process and duties of those involved. Keep evidence of the actual transaction and conduct rather than drawing a conclusion solely from an unusual price or a delayed invoice. For internal errors, use the relevant correction and voluntary-disclosure rules. An intentional false claim is a different matter from an ordinary reporting mistake. No submission to a live reporting portal is required to read these guides or improve the business’s invoice, supplier and stock-control procedures.

Prepare a Transaction-Based Report

GST-specific indicators identified by IRAS include fictitious purchase invoices, false export documents used to support zero-rating, omitted output tax and false customer or supplier information. These are indicators for examination, not findings of guilt. A useful report connects the suspected conduct with identifiable transactions: which supplier issued the document, what goods were actually supplied, which accounting period is affected, and how the claimed treatment differs from the records available.

IRAS asks for identifying particulars, the method used, amounts and years involved, supporting evidence already in the reporter’s possession, and how the reporter learned of the conduct. If a relevant record is held elsewhere, describe it and its location instead of presenting an unsupported reconstruction as an original document. Keep a clear distinction between something personally observed and information received from someone else.

Understand the Reporting and Investigation Boundaries

Reports can be anonymous, and IRAS states that identities and supplied information are confidential, subject to the legal qualifications explained in its guidance. Tax-secrecy rules also prevent IRAS from providing case-status or investigation-outcome updates to the informer. Reporting another party does not confer immunity for the reporter’s own involvement. For an investigation affecting the business, preserve existing paper and electronic records and provide truthful, complete answers to requests; these duties should not be confused with a promise that making a report will resolve a commercial dispute.
