Working in Singapore or Abroad: Scenario-Based Tax Resources

This employee directory connects common work changes to the relevant IRAS guidance.

Choose the Scenario Matching Your Situation

Topics include tax clearance for non-citizens, retrenchment, retirement, overseas work, Singapore employment, foreign employers, relocation and re-employment. A separate route addresses treaty exemptions. Use the relevant detailed page to distinguish taxable employment receipts, non-taxable components and any required employer clearance or personal filing steps.

Start with Where and Why the Work Was Performed

The Singapore-work guidance treats income from services or employment exercised in Singapore as Singapore-sourced, including cash and non-cash compensation. The applicable rate then depends on tax residence. An overseas employer or foreign payment account should therefore not be treated as an automatic exemption when the work itself is performed here. Identify the employment arrangement and actual work locations before selecting the scenario page.

Wholly overseas employment is a different branch: IRAS describes a contract to be based overseas and perform the full employment services wholly outside Singapore, regardless of how or where pay is received. However, overseas duties incidental to a Singapore employment remain taxable under the stated rules. A Singapore-based regional role with business travel is not automatically the same as a separate job based wholly overseas.

Match Each Employment Event to Its Own Procedure

Prepare a timeline of Singapore work, overseas assignments, job changes, final pay and departure plans. This is a practical way to identify which detailed guidance is needed: income-source treatment, residence, a treaty claim, relocation benefits or employer tax clearance. Keep retrenchment and retirement components separately identifiable because those pages examine the character of each payment. Personal return filing and employer clearance are distinct steps; moving abroad or changing employer does not by itself demonstrate that either has been completed.
