Key Requirements
Apply the withholding rate to the taxable portion, not automatically the whole withdrawal. IRAS’s example uses a S$300,000 withdrawal with 50% taxable: at 24%, withholding is S$36,000. It illustrates the mechanism rather than fixing every account holder’s retirement age or withdrawal entitlement. Qualifying lower-volume, no-other-income withdrawals can use the conditional 15% concession. Residents’ final tax uses progressive rates; the source describes non-resident treatment separately. Any unused credit is refunded after assessment. Keep operator statements and correct contact details for reconciliation.
Test Both Conditions for the Lower Withholding Rate
The concessionary 15% withholding is conditional. IRAS requires cumulative withdrawals in the calendar year not to exceed S$200,000 and no other income besides the SRS withdrawals in that year. The account holder must declare that both conditions are fulfilled to the SRS operator. Do not assess each withdrawal independently: several small withdrawals can exceed the annual limit when added together.
Prepare a calendar-year withdrawal record before making the declaration, and consider other income rather than treating retirement from a job as proof that no other income exists. Keep the declaration and operator statements with the tax records. These checks concern withholding administration; they do not establish that every withdrawal qualifies for the same taxable proportion or that an early withdrawal has no separate consequences.
Separate Cash Withheld from Final Tax
For the source’s S$300,000 example, the taxable half is S$150,000 and 24% withholding on that amount is S$36,000. The example should not be read as a current universal retirement-age rule. Final resident liability uses progressive rates; the source states that non-resident final liability is 15% or the progressive resident calculation, whichever is higher. Withholding is a credit against the eventual liability. For a refund enquiry, supply the name, tax reference number and forwarding address requested by IRAS, together with a practical reconciliation of the operator’s deduction and assessment.
